Not my New Year. De-colonization, like feminism, is a complete change in consciousness, and it took me a long time to decolonize. With feminism, I am still learning.
It is interesting, however, to know that in the (African) Ewe language, there is only one word for “past” and “future”—esto. To refer to yesterday, you add the clause “si va yi”, creating “etso si va yi”, which means “esto which has passed me by.” To refer to tomorrow, you add the clause “si gbona”, creating “etso si gbona”, which means “esto which is coming to meet you.”
